Sarah Brooks: Teacher and Performer

For Prospective Students

Sarah specializes in designing individualized lessons based on the learner's interests and goals. She can instruct in the classical method of learning to read and interpret sheet music, or how to play from a "fake book" based on a lead sheet and chords (how most jazz musicians play). Lesson books come with a variety of styles of music, and supplemental music can be based on the student's favorite types of music (pop, childrens' favorites, classical, Broadway, TV themes, etc.).

For most of her life Sarah has worked in education in some way -- teaching piano lessons, middle school language arts, history in museums, etc. -- so she has vast experience in educational methods for all ages. She is an active member of the Raleigh chapter of the Music Teachers National Association.

For Special Events

There is something truly special about live music, whether for a private party, wedding, nursing home or restaurant. Sarah can provide lovely piano and vocal music to fit your needs.

Sarah has been playing piano since she was five years old purely out of love for the instrument. She minored in music with honors, studying first for a year at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY, and then finishing her degree at Westminster College in New Wilmington, PA. For her senior concert she performed her favorite piece, Geshwin's Rhapsody in Blue, with the college orchestra. Currently she enjoys playing live music in area coffee houses and nursing homes, and continues her own education by studying with a master jazz pianist, Lenore Raphael.

"Sarah’s thoughtful, patient and – most importantly – effective approach reflects her years of training and experience in music education.  Her weekly teachings always change my perspective allowing me to better understand the piano and the way to learn piano.  As a musician, I appreciate Sarah’s musical abilities.  As a student and a parent, I appreciate her patience and positive attitude toward my learning a new instrument."
